Teenager's Superhuman Smoothie

My sport loving 14 year old son Hamish, has decided he wants to get strong and put some bumps on his sticks (he's tall and lean) ;). Thank goodness he also started to realise all the carbs he was eating were not helping, making his energy spike then crash, and him grumpy!

Hamish was looking for a pre match smoothie, so we played with what ingredients he loves and created a delicious and supercharged smoothie that he now requests all the time! I suggest starting with a smoothie based on your teenager's favourite ingredients, then slowly decrease the sugary ingredients and add some you know are extra nutritious. I've given some suggestions below.

Teenagers usually burn off more carbs than us, so you will see there are three serves of carbs in this smoothie rather than the one in my Superhuman Smoothie. If you're making a post game smoothie, I recommend leaving out the oats, as the focus is more protein for recovery. 

I'd love your feedback and suggestions of what you put in your kids and teenagers smoothies. 

Prep Time: 3 minutes

Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 1/2 banana 
  • 1/2 cup of berries (frozen are ideal)
  • 1/4 cup oats (preferably gluten free)
  • 1/4 cup high protein plain yoghurt (Chobani is good or if no dairy, then plain coconut yoghurt)
  • 1/4 avocado (optional though makes it nice and creamy)
  • 30 gram scoop of plain or vanilla whey or hemp protein powder (try to get one with the least amount of added ingredients)
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseeds or flaxseed meal (for Omega 3's)
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence (if not using a flavoured protein powder)
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice (if you're going for highest protein possible then low fat milk is best)
  • 1/4 cup ice

Optional add ins

  • Spinach, kale or any greens, MCT oil, hemp seeds, green banana flour

Directions  

  1. Blend all ingredients on high for 2 minutes till smooth and creamy, if it's a bit thick add some more water and blend.

  2. Pour into a big glass and enjoy.

  3. Get ready to feel supercharged!
